Obituary

Delton DeWayne Smith, 86 of Panhandle went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 20, at home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at First Baptist Church, Panhandle, TX.  Graveside services will follow at Panhandle Cemetery.  There will be a family and friend visitation, Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Minton-Chatwell Funeral Home, Panhandle, TX from 5-7 pm.

Delton was born December 18, 1935, near Munday, TX to Chester & Frances Smith.  He graduated from Weinert, TX in 1954.  Delton served his country in the Army with honor from 1958-1960.  After leaving the Army, Delton began farming and met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Dupler.  The two were wed on August, 9, 1963 in Morton, TX.  While farming, DeWayne and Elizabeth proudly welcomed their two sons, Tad & Del Smith.  In 1973 he accepted a job with the Texas Railroad Commission, moving the family to Panhandle, TX.  In 1988 Delton retired from The Texas Railroad Commission and accepted a position as Safety Inspector with Groendyke Transport until his retirement in 2004.

While in Panhandle, as a member of The First Baptist Church, Delton served as an Ordained Deacon.  He had a passion for serving Christ, teaching his Sunday School Class, and Mission work.  Delton also enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball and a big supporter of the Panthers and Pantherettes. His hobbies included woodworking, knife sharpening, and old black and white cowboy movies.

Later in life, he and his wife, Elizabeth, filled their time with following grandchildren’s activities. They were his pride and joy. Above all, the focus of Delton’s life was building relationships and leading others to Christ.

Delton was preceded in death by parents Chester & Frances Smith, brother-in-law, Johnny Earp, and in-laws, Lester and Linda Dupler.  Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Smith of the home, sons, Tad & wife Kelley Smith of Pampa, Del & wife Stephanie Smith of Seminole, sister Marilyn Jetton and husband Keaton of Lubbock, grandchildren, Ryan Smith of Lubbock, Kambry Smith of Amarillo, Addison Smith of Amarillo, Brooklyn Smith of Seminole, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “ Uncle Bo.”

The family has requested that all memorials be made to First Baptist Church, Panhandle, TX, P.O. Box 189, 79068.
