Rossie Gideon

June 22, 1934 — April 8, 2023

Panhandle

Rossie Evelyn Lyles Gideon, age 88, of Panhandle, entered Heaven on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

There will be a celebration of her life held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 11:00 am at Panhandle Cemetery. Visitation with family will be at Minton Chatwell funeral home in Panhandle on Tuesday, April 11 from 5 – 7 pm.

Rossie was born to Doc and Pauline Lyles on June 22, 1934 in Brownfield, TX. She was an amazing mother and grandmother, not to mention what an incredible caregiver she was to her parents, her in-laws, and most of all her loving husband of 60 years, Gene.

Anytime her children needed her, she was there for them. She insisted on hosting all family events, which included meal prep and clean up (non-negotiable).

Rossie was a homemaker, farmer, and amazing cake decorator. During harvest she fed farmers, drove trucks, pulled the family water well, and worked right beside the men. Of course farm life included caring for livestock too, and she never batted an eye.  Along with all these duties, she still found time to do income taxes, sew costumes for kids and grandkids events, including helping Carl with the Amarillo Dinner Theatre.

Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, and gardening. Roses were her favorite thing to garden, and she always kept them beautiful. Of course, her favorite hobby was caring for the grandchildren. She found time for track meets, marching competitions, soccer games, basketball games, and rollerblading competitions. She was even a Girl Scout leader.

Some of her favorite things were DQ dudes, puzzles, root beer floats, fishing with her mother and sister, flower arranging, her trips to Carmel, California, as well as coffee with desserts.

Rossie is preceded in death by spouse, Gene Gideon; parents, Doc and Pauline Lyles; sisters Bernice Henderson and Bobby Smith; daughter-in-law, Elaine Gideon; and granddaughter, Vanessa Gibson Salinas.

She is survived by daughter, June Gibson of Amarillo; son, Carl Gideon and daughter-in-law Lisa from Quinlan, Texas; son, Robert Gideon and daughter-in-law Sheila from Amarillo; grandsons, William Gibson and wife Christina from White Fish, Montana, Jeromy Gibson from Panhandle, Nathan Gideon from Amarillo, Daniel Gideon and his wife Shaynie from Amarillo,  Brandon Gideon and his wife Alaina from Royce City, Texas, Fernando Salinas from Borger; granddaughter, Lisa Hall and her husband Trenton from Bushland, Texas. She has 14 great grandchildren, Brec, Ashton, Natalie, Drew, Sophia, Vivianne, Braxxen, Karsyn, Lincoln, Gracie, Micah, Jordan, Fernando, and Alexa, and 1 great great grandchild, Vanna.

Rossie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law, Lydia Holmes.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

The family will be at Robert and Sheila’s residence after the service.
