Michael "Mike" Eugene Swafford

September 19, 1956 — June 16, 2025

Panhandle

Michael Eugene "Mike" Swafford, 68, passed from this life Monday, June 16, 2025, at his home.

Mike was born September 19, 1956 in Amarillo to Eugene Patrick Swafford and Phyllis Ann Wormsbaker Swafford. He was employed in the Automobile Industry for over 40 years where he mentored countless others and never met a stranger. After a whirlwind, God-led courtship, Mike and Mollie married May 17, 2015 in Amarillo.

Mike loved horses, but due to his large stature he was not suited for riding them. However, he strongly supported his daughter in showing and riding horses as she fulfilled her dreams on horseback. He loved all animals and found pleasure in riding his own iron horse, his Harley Davidson. Many trips to Ruidoso with friends will be remembered fondly by those who accompanied him.

Mike loved college football especially the Alabama team, Roll Tide! He happily played football for West Texas State University.

He was always the Life of the Party, was called a gentle giant, and was the protector of his family, including his two brothers, whom he took under his wing growing up. (Of course, Mike would never admit that he was just a tad shorter than his middle brother.)

Mike loved the Lord and served Him as an active member of Golden Spread Emmaus and he was honored to serve on the Board of Directors. Mike was sure of his future in eternity and he continued his treatment so the medical community could find out more about his rare form of cancer, hoping that it would help someone else. Returning to Panhandle to live after his retirement brought Mike great joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Mollie, his beloved daughter Whitney Wells and her husband Reed of Amarillo, his two stepsons Cyrus Fields and Wilson Fields both of Amarillo, his brothers Glen Swafford of Amarillo and Byron Swafford of Borger, his three nieces, whom he adored, Taryn Fraley, Lacey Swafford and Amber Swafford and their children.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2025 under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. The family will meet friends from 4:00 until 6:00 Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2025 at the funeral home in Panhandle.
