Leona was born in Richmond, California on September 16, 1937, to Raymond and Crestella (Derrick) Gossett. Ray, prompted by Crestella's homesickness, and because he didn't want to raise a "California Prune Picker," got her back to Texas as quickly as he could. Leona went to primary grades in Kellerville, Texas and finished at McLean High School, graduating in 1956. She continued her education at Draughon's Business College graduating with a degree in Secretarial Training.
In January of 1960, in the midst of moving her parents, she was introduced to Joel Lynch. After a quick five-month courtship, Joel and Leona married in June of 1960, and enjoyed 60 years of marriage.
Leona worked as an executive secretary for Phillips 66 for a couple of years. She worked as a Special Ed Aide at Phillips Elementary School to help with her kid’s college expenses. The majority of her life, she managed her household gracefully and poured Christ into her children through her example, her words, and her servitude. She could stretch a dollar and still fill all of our needs and most of our wants.
Leona had many gifts. Some of her best were hospitality, genuine love and concern, quiet wisdom and compassion for others.
Miles and miles of stitches were in baby clothes, doll clothes, barbie clothes, kids clothes, grand baby clothes, and quilts all sewn in love. She enjoyed painting and crafting. She loved RVing with Joel and their Wheels-a-go-go group. "On the road again" to see and experience so many beautiful places was their motto. Her therapy was gardening and tending to her flowers in her sunroom.
Her family time trumped all of her pleasures. She was the happiest when her house was full and noisy. Her love language to her family and friends was cooking and serving delicious food. She loved playing cards, dominoes, and other games with kids and grandkids. She loved cheering her family on in all our sports and other endeavors. She truly was the wind beneath our wings.
While all the relationships she had were near and dear to her, the most paramount was her relationship with Jesus, her Lord and Savior. She shared her faith by action through her service to others, teaching Bible Class and teaching young girls in a Tabitha class. Leona had an infectious faith and let her light shine in all settings. That light was the reflection of God's love and his teachings that were stamped on her heart. Leona said that the baptisms and faith of all her children and grandchildren was her greatest joy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Crestella Gossett; husband, Joel Lynch; brother, Kenneth Gossett; and in-laws, Johnnie and Nina Lynch.
