LaVon Jeanette Berger, 88 of Borger and Lubbock, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 24th, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 5th, 2025, at the Minton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Conny Moore of New Life Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Born LaVon Jeanette Salyards to Clyde and Maude Salyards in Littleton, Colorado on March 19th, 1937, she was raised in Eaton, Colorado. The best way to describe her is that she was a blacksmith’s daughter. Her family were farmers and traveling wheat harvesters, but her father was a real live blacksmith. She learned the value of hard work and loved being outside building and fixing things. She enjoyed her many “projects”.
After graduation from Eaton High School as the salutatorian, she moved on to The University of Colorado. She worked many jobs to help pay her way through school even spending some time in California working in Los Angeles as a clerk. At The University of Colorado, she met Hugh Berger, and they got married August 23rd, 1959, and immediately relocated to Borger where she spent 58 years.
LaVon started bowling in 1961 and was an accomplished competitor making the finals of the WIBC Queens Tournament in 1976. She served as secretary of Borger’s WIBC Chapter for many years. Her passion was golf. She loved the outdoors and the physical attributes of the game. She played in many doubles’ tournaments with her friend, Carl Mooney of Borger, and they won their fair share of tournaments. LaVon won the Borger Country Club Championship at least once.
She worked at Phillips, Citizens Bank and Moore’s Pharmacy as well as taught bowling for Frank Phillips College. During their lives, Hugh and LaVon traveled to all 50 States, mainly bowling, and 46 different countries. This blacksmith’s daughter from a small town in eastern Colorado got to see the world and she loved every minute of it.
She is survived by her only child, Alan Berger and his wife Julie. LaVon has 3 grandchildren: Brett and his wife Hanna, Viktoriya (Tori) and Peyton. She loved her family and especially her niece Jill Mark and nephews Glenn Neal, wife Gaye and Paul Neal. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hugh Berger, her brother, Don Salyards and her sister Bernie Neal.
