James “Chief” Ledell Qualls, 77, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Celebration Family Church in Fritch. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. The family will receive guests from 5-7 pm on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Celebration Family Church in Fritch. In lieu of flowers his memory may be honored with a gift to The Amarillo 100 Club, P.O. Box 589 Amarillo, Texas, 79105.
James was born May 24, 1948, in Duncan, Oklahoma to Elvin Qualls and Lorene Lewis Qualls. He married Jody Kaye McCrary in 1989, and she preceded him in death in 2006. James then married Kellie Snider on March 1, 2008. He retired from law enforcement after 38 years of service, having spent most of that time with Hutchinson County Sheriff Department. James was a member of Celebration Family Church. He enjoyed reading and studying God’s word, as well as fishing, hunting and camping. Nothing brought more joy to his life than his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Lorene Qualls; wife, Jody Kaye McCrary Qualls; sister, Nelda Jean Qualls Robinson; and brother, Elvin Odell Qualls.
Survivors include his wife, Kellie Qualls; children, Shere Qualls, Lori Qualls; Kenny Qualls and wife Sandra, Jeannie Berger and husband Kevin; their mother, Susan McGrath Frauendiener; children, Bobbi Peek and husband Matthew, Kimmy Gaines and husband Trent, Krista Granger and fiancé Steve Wagner, Jerry Lee Husband and wife Alice; twenty-six grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; sister, Genita “Aunt Sneaky” Robinson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family.
