Edith Johnson was born in Higgins, Texas in 1938 to Charles and Bertha Johnson. She was the baby of seven children. After the tornado in Higgins in 1947, her family moved to Arkansas, where many of her favorite childhood memories were made. She loved playing with her siblings in the trees and abundant water of the beautiful Arkansas countryside. Her favorite memory was that of a wild grapevine that grew over the ledge of a small cliff over a stream. Her brother, Clyde, found that if they swung it just right, it made a great way to splash into the stream. Eventually the family moved back to Texas. Edith loved visiting her Aunt Sadie, where she learned much about housekeeping and cooking.
Edith attended Pampa High School. She married Ray Smith twelve days after turning 16 years of age. They were married 53 years before his passing in 2007. They always loved camping and music, fellowship and eating with family and friends. She always enjoyed playing games, especially Mexican Train dominoes and she didn't like to lose!
Edith was well known for her superb cooking skills, especially her pies...coconut cream, some would say, was her best, or maybe it was the chocolate.
During the decades when her children's children were small, holidays were full of large family gatherings, sometimes as many as forty people. Edith would almost always invite close friends, neighbors...anyone who might be lonely, too, reflecting the love of Christ through her warm heart and hospitality.
Edith always took pride in her appearance and tried to show her respect for others and herself by her careful attention to her hair, skin and painted fingernails. She also enjoyed beautiful clothes, shoes and purses and jewelry. Many a young granddaughter layered her fingers with Grandma Edie’s rings from the lovely glass jewelry stands on her vanity.
Above all, Edith’s greatest joy was found in her relationship with the Lord. Her deep faith guided her life, shaped her love for family and friends, and gave her a lasting peace and hope that she carried to eternity.
In 2008, Edith married her second husband, Alvin Dale Richerson. They were married for 7 years before he passed. She loved spending time with Dale at their home in Angel Fire, NM, traveling and going on cruises. They also enjoyed getting together with their church family to eat and play games.
Edith is survived by her children, Myrna Parsons (Jon) of Dumas, TX, Nita Campbell (Randy) of Amarillo, TX and Steven Smith of Lovington, NM.
She was also survived by her grandchildren Shanna (Billy), Kenneth (Sabrina), Amber, (Justin), Brandi (Trent), Jordan (Rachel), Brandon (Stephanie), Whitney (Travis), and Karlye,
