July 12, 1922 — October 8, 2022

Borger

Deloris Ellen Kane, 100, died Saturday, October 8, 2022, in Borger. Cremation is under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

A truly one-of-a-kind woman, she was a pillar of her community and her large extended family.  She will be dearly missed by both.

Born July 12, 1922, to William Jefferson and Zeta Fern (Plymell) Cameron. Deloris grew up on a farm in Pattonsburg, MO. She graduated from Pattonsburg High School in 1945, her course delayed by her father’s rule that his daughter wasn’t allowed to ride a horse to school alone. She later attended Central Business College in Kansas City, MO and worked at Maxwell  Swade Insurance Agency. She married John Scott Kane on April 18, 1948. Her new husband was offered a job in Waverly, KS later that year, where they lived  together until his death in 2003. Deloris loved to garden and tend to her many beautiful flowers. She grew corn, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and peas in addition to her famous green beans. The hundreds of pints she canned each year were treasured by family and friends she gave them to. Equally treasured were her cookies, she always made sure were available for visitors. They, along with zinnias from her flower garden, won ribbons at the Coffey County Fair. When not gardening or baking cookies, she could often be found writing cards and letters. Hundreds of people could count on an individualized birthday and Christmas card from Deloris, the latter of which she would often start writing in October. She was an active member of Waverly United Methodist Church for more than seventy years.

Deloris is preceded in death by her siblings, Frank Cameron, Carl Cameron, Wilma Davis, and Paul Cameron; husband , John Scott Kane ( June 23,2003); her son, John William Kane of Wichita, KS (October 7, 2002 ); her daughter and son-in-law, Jean Marie Vandergriff (July 18, 2021) and Leon Vandergriff ( March 22, 2009) of Odessa, TX.

Deloris is survived by her granddaughter and husband Becky and Clint Nugent of Borger, TX; her grandson and his fiancée, John Mark Kane and Erin Whepley of Wichita, KS; Mark’s sister and their Parents, Sara Bauer, Pamela Turkle of Haysville, KS; her great- grandson , Hunter Paul Tate of Casper, WY; her great-granddaughter and her husband , Hannah and Bradley Coward of Borger, TX, and their children, Cason Clay Coward and a new great-grandchild on the way.
